Hey Choir!

Well, great job to everyone this Open House! Just want to commend all of you especially those that stood all the way to the end and helped to pack up. And also for those that spent a lot of effort in the preparation work. You've all done a lot and we appreciate your hard work!

3 weeks to perfect those 4 songs wasn't easy, just want to specially commend the girls on their hard work to finish Tegami in a week! Not easy, but you all did it. The guys did just as well! Cantate Domino was really nice.

Also want to thank Yi Ting and Ying Yian for coming down to give us a hand! Couldn't have managed it without your help!

Now on to our next goal! SYF. Let us keep focused on it, working hard on it so that we can give it our all. Gold w Honours! JIAYOU!

2. Don't be late! Come early and do some prep work (warm up, drink water, etc) before your auditions. I'm sure it'll help!

3. Come in your school uniform or half uniform.

4. If you get lost, don't be afraid to ask for directions. Remember, it's H2 Music Room.

Really, really proud of you! Hold your tears and turn the remaining dissatisfaction into strength and determination for SYF! After all, there is no reason for despair because we are the category winners!

We've put it a lot of our effort hiding underground in the school and in the hotel and standing outside the lobby braving the cold winds and the scorching European sun in Olomouc to prepare for this competition. The extent of improvement which we have achieved over the short time is commendable and rather impressive!

We'd embarked on this trip as 33 individuals and have returned stronger, together as a more unified group. Despite the fact that the rest of the Year 2s have stepped down, the spirit must not fade and the other non-trip members should be included in this renewed spirit!

Also, congratulations to the newly-appointed members of the Music Committee(:

Continue working hard ah. The seniors will still drop by once in a while hehe.

3 Days to Flying Off!

Hello again!

We'll be meeting at the airport at 2230 @ Terminal 1 on Monday night (2 days from now! PSYCHE!). Many were sniffling/sneezing during practice today so please, really do take care of yourselves (water/vitamins/sleep/water/vitamins/sleep)! Also, keep your lips moisturised with lip balm, alright? Cracked lips really hurt like a b*tch and singing with them would be too.

I hope you've started packing (yes, picking out outfit ensembles and/or stacking up potential travel clothes do count as being in the process of packing too)! Other than that, here are some reminders from today's rehearsal:

Greater contrast in dynamics (especially for Wolf)
Contrast in emotions (especially for the verses of Shima-e)
Don't rush or slow down!
BE SQUEAKY-CLEAN AND METICULOUS ABOUT THE CHOREOGRAPHY

If you didn't already know, WE WANT GOLD (or more than that, even). We're getting nearer and nearer to the competition date and the final practice is on Monday at ONE in the afternoon! Please, please, please don't be late because time will be very tight.

Oh yes, one last thing (boy, I'm getting really naggy), these are things that should be in your hand luggage on Monday:

PASSPORT
Choir gown (for girls), blazer (for boys)

& these are things you have to remember to bring along, at least in your check-in luggage:

Choir scores
Performance shoes
School uniform + tie
Pitch-pipes/tuning forks for those who have them

Alright, that's all I can think of for now. GET A MOVE ON IT FOR PACKING. Don't leave anything important behind!

Greetings!

Here's a rough translation (very rough indeed; we can't expect much from online translations) of Shima-e just so that we can have a better idea of what we're singing about. This is to help facilitate the creation of ideas and atmospheres to bring out the feelings of melancholic longing, aimless wandering and the desperation from searching.

Stranger
Where are you?
Is the round each other believed?
Do you knock against your chest when turning round one rotation door of the glass?
It keeps searching for the drift island in the sea in the city.
Wandering person
Do you keep walking?
Are tying palm and palm requested?
When even the horizon of the mind is found some time, can you and I be met?
It connects and it keeps searching for the island of green.

So it's a pervasive theme of uncertainty and loneliness. Hopes rise and hopes fall. Be creative with your interpretation but make sure it's tangential to the song!

HELLO CHOIR!

Gosh, the last post was nearly half a year ago. We are soooo lacking in updates. Quite a lot has happened since January: Open House 2010, CCA Fair, performance outside Ngee Ann City and our guest-performance at AJC choir's VoyAJe in The Esplanade(:

So, the choir population has grown by wayyyyy a lot, as we see from here :D

Next picture, would be one taken by Ms Du when we were performing outside Ngee Ann City.
We'll never forgive the horrible acoustics and that temperamental fountain that couldn't decide whether to stop spraying or to continue. It was our first time performing in public with the 2010 batch. It was a good experience(: There was an exchange with AJC and VJC somewhere along the way at Siglap South CC. The aftermath of that produced an improved sound of the choir and here's us again. This is a recording of us singing Shima-e [Toru Takemitsu] at The Esplanade(:

Okay, next up, is the trip to Vienna/Olomouc! Dear people, please keep yourself healthy and hydrated with vitamins, proteins, fibre and water! Keep aiming high and believe in yourselves! Countdown: 10 days left till we fly off! Well, actually 11 since our flight's actually taking off on the 1st of June. Anyhow, strive on despite the slew of rehearsals (we know 4 times a week sounds crazy but it's for a better good!) and relentlessly growing pile of homework and revision. It's tough but we can do it! Year ones, mug hard for Common Tests and year twos, mug hard for BT2s!

appeal auditions tomorrow!

Hey hey hey potential J1s! Tomorrow is posting results day!!! yikes!!!!! I'm as nervous as you cuz my bro is also getting back his posting results! Been through it once, but it feels like i'm going through it again! 0.o

Anyway, for those who are really interested in getting into SAJC, but cannot make it though JAE posting, u can appeal through choir!

If you have had choir experience before, that would definitely give u a chance! If you do not have choir background, it's alright!! As long as you can sing, appreciate music and a good listener, we want you too!

Here are the details for the audition tomorrow (27 jan 2010)

1. the audition will commence at 4.30pm

2. Venue will be the AVA (ask any friendly saint for the directions to the AVA)

3.Please go to the school website (http://www.standrewsjc.moe.edu.sg/home/) and download an appeal form. Fill it up and submit it to the general office when u come over to our college tomorrow.

4. Please contact Mr Andrew Tan to make an appointment BEFORE coming over for the audition (his number can be found on the SAJC website, scroll all the way down on the homepage. You should see a segment titled JAE trial runs, trials/auditions. Choir is at the top.)

5. Come in your secondary school uniform or a secondary school based shirt with ur school bottom.

6. There is no need to prepare anything, but do make sure u are fit to sing. Drink lots of water, have confidence and just be yourself!

7. A word of advice from one appeal student to the other (yep, i appealed through choir last year!), warm up sufficiently before you go for the audition. It'll help you sing better and sound better!

Hello everyone!! It's going to be a very exciting year ahead of us! Here's a little something to olook forward to! we will be going to Czech Republic and Vienna from 31st May to 7th June 2010!!!

We will be competing in the international choir festival held from 2nd-6th June at Olomouc, Czech Republic!! :D Of course, we will definitely go sight seeing and visit many places of interest during our trip to VIENNA and CZECH REPUBLIC! HOW EXCITING!! :D :D :D

Hello Choir! <3

Haha for those of you who happen to be online tonight to read this, or tmr morning...... I just want to say these to you guys, honestly speaking I know I've been saying this so many times, super naggy via so many mediums somemore, F2F (face to face) / SMS / HERE but all I really hope for all of us to have, is this sense of hope & faith in us , that we can all do it together! :)

I hope you guys have done your own individual responsibility, e.g take care of yourself, look at your scores, rest and all, and now as a choir, we need to foster this mutual trust with each other, believe in each and everyone of us, because we form our choir, we sing as one. :)

And a choir, to sing freely, happily enjoying the music is a result of our ability to trust one another, it's like really a powerful force that bonds, binds and connects everyone of us together. :)

Ok! I know you guys are probably drowsy and tired, please sleep early tonight okay? Tmr still got school , long day ahead! And even for the J1s, I think you guys should STILL sleep early! At least 8 hours of sleep hopefully! (Though I'd love a 10-12hr sleep...) Please please do, all right? :D

Hello choir! <3

Hope you guys did make full use of the time to rest really well this afternoon! Always remember to rest sufficiently ok, and very importantly remember that syf's coming really soon! Drink lots of water and rest your body/mind etc all right? It's really important now for people to recover (e.g Quan Mei, Josephine, etc too many to name!) and for people not to fall sick but to remain in optimum conditions! :D

By the way guys, please check your emails tonight ok? I've sent out an email a couple of minutes ago and I really think you guys should go take a look! It's SOS okz! <3

Remembering that optimism, ability to perform at your best potential comes with hard work and effort on your part, I guess you all should already know what you all need to do! :)

A big thank you to everyone of you! Hehe, the seniors for coming down with flowers/food/moral support! The teachers, Mr Tay and last but not least, my SAJC Choir! :)

Sigh, so many people are sick / falling sick etc, sooooo please do take good care of yourselves ok? Few more days to go! & currently, I know there's probably many things on your minds, (e.g studies, homework, relationships, family issues, personal problems) and that you guys have to face so much of this...... but I know you guys can do it k! Be GAY & optimistic about it okayz HAHA! (:

Anyway, I have no idea if I've ever broadcasted about this blog so I shall do it tmr! Haha! A bit late hor, but yah all I really want to say is that... there's a lot of potential in every single one of you and I hope you guys believe in yourselves, have faith & trust in yourself and with each other! We are a choir, so mutual trust and faith is really important yeah! :)

Missing lots of people! 2009 SAJC choir!

Haha it's been really long since I updated here because... I don't know what to say! But since many of you have been reminding me to update, I shall!!!

Hmm well dear choir, I know time's really not on your side these days when school work's piling up like nobody's business, worsened by the intensity & drilling of PW (yes juniors I've been through it so I understand!!!), you guys still have to balance choir with all your work..... it's really not easy I know! But, bearing in mind that concert's coming up really soon, together with SYF, you guys have to push on a little harder okay, more than just a little I hope.... we can do this, yes!

So anyway, please remember to take good care of yourselves! We have many of our friends, especially Sops and Altos falling sick! And tenors too! Basses, I hope you all remain strong ok? Haha please rest well all right, remember to drink water and sleep early!

Oh yes yes! Please also remember to go through your scores (in your mind, or literally) all right and remember that every member of our choir should take his/her responsibility in our music-making together as a choir!

Persevere on ok guys, I know we can surely do it! Hehehehe!

2008's coming to an end & I hope everyone of you had a great year! :) Thanks a lot for all the love, support, advice that our seniors had given us! We really appreciate it ok! :) 2009 marks the start of a new year, for the choir to continue growing as one, working to be a better choir! On the 8th December 2008, SAJChorale embarked on a 10-day trip to Prague in the 9th International Competition Festival of Advent and Christmas Music with a simple purpose in mind: to GEL - Grow together as a choir, Experience other cultures and different kinds of choral music and Learn from other choirs. Highlights of this trip were the numerous charity performances in churches and castles, sightseeing and learning more about the history and culture of the Czech Republic, “Prague by Night” as well as the competition.

Outdoor rehearsals with jumping-jacks were conducted for acclimatisation to the frosty weather. During a sightseeing tour, we visited a church where the priest invited us to give an impromptu performance. He was so thrilled with our performance that he had our photographs taken to be published in the church’s newsletter and gave each of us an exquisite artwork as souvenirs to bring home. Also, we visited Gymnázium Český Krumlov High School to learn more about the education system there. We truly enjoyed the sightseeing of the picturesque school, our performance for the high school students and forging new friendship with the welcoming students.

We had the opportunity to perform at different renaissance, baroque and gothic churches and castles with astounding acoustics - we heard for the first time what sacred music was meant to sound like! Our first performance was at the Opening Festival Concert at Liben Castle where we showcased a few of our competition pieces and other familiar carols. We were also selected to perform in the Advent Concert the following day at the St. Nicholas Church where we sang and danced to folksongs from South-East Asia.

“Prague by Night” was a rich buffet dinner cruise on a yacht that sailed down the Vltava River, running through Prague’s city centre and affording us with beautiful night scenes of Prague Castle, Charles Bridge and the likes, with other choirs onboard. It was a really splendid evening.

On competition day, every chorister was filled with apprehension and jitters. We were one of the smallest choirs (only 21 of us!) and the only one to participate in two categories that were both held on the same day. We were here for the experience and did not expect to win major prizes, having heard superb singing from other choirs in prior concerts. Nonetheless, everyone put their best foot forward and by the grace of God, SAJChorale won a Gold medal and emerged as the overall champion of the “Youth Choir Category” as well as a silver medal for the “Adult Folklore Category”. For the 1st time in the history of SAJChorale, we had made our mark in the international choral scene.

The trip was concluded by a good-will concert at a rehabilitation centre, Červený Dvůr Castle in Český Krumlov. After our respective items, we invited The Boulevard Harmonists from South Africa for a combined item and together with the SAJChorale, sang “O Come O Ye Faithful” as our last song to a standing ovation from an appreciative audience. It was an enjoyable, eye-opening and enriching experience!

I figured out that the seniors won't get to read this write-up next year since they're leaving SAJC for either NS or universities. So, to be fair to them, I think this write up should put online for them and the rest to read. :D :D

Also, we, the juniors would like to express our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for the seniors' participation in this trip and for the teachers I/C: Ms Ng and Ms Du, for being our mother, father, brother, sister and teacher whenever we need them. And Mr. Tay for always being very encouraging and caring disciplinarian helping us whenever we need. Thank you so so much Mr. Tay, teachers and seniors!! :D

Hope you all enjoy the trip as much as I did!! :D

SYC Sequence Concert

Members of the SAJC choir attended the Sequence concert by the SYC Ensemble Singers on the 31st August, last Sunday. I was there to support Albert, Adyll, and Aini(how come their names all start with 'a'?!?).

It was a great performance. I especially liked the piece with made up words, Villarosa Sarialdi. I'm always a sucker for such songs, unhindered by the rigidity of proper language. The other Villarosa pieces were also excellent.

Missa Lorca was a mixed bag. Some of the songs are to my liking, for example Gloria and Sanctus, with its text/scene painting, while others are a tad too quirky for my taste, like Credo. The execution, however, was all superb.

The use of split groups for some of the pieces was again in evidence, something that I noticed is becoming more and more prevalent in local choral performances. A gimmick, or a way to enhance the choral effect? If done well, it definitely adds to the experience.

The J2s are in the midst of their prelims, and the J1 final exams are in two weeks time. You all must keep working hard!

dear beloved j1s,

on behalf of the seniors, i would like to thank you all once again for the farewell! :D though there wasnt any aircon (which kinda sucked, HAHA!), the touching powerpoint, the songs ya'll sang and the lovely presents really made it all up! no one actually saw but i did tear when i was watching the video. heeh!

all those well wishes & memories, im sure the seniors would never forget them. we came into choir as newbies, strangers to one another. throughout the year, valuable friendships forged & the music making times together, it'll never be the same with another group of people.

j1s, continue to work hard. there may be times where the going gets tough and you feel like giving up, always know that you guys are a team and everyone is in this together! no one is to be left behind! if you guys need any help, i want you to know that the j2s, and even the j3s, will always be here for you!

Sights of Taiwan

It's been a while since the last update. All of us busy with exams and whatnot. And of course, the single performance with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra for their concert on the 12th of July, Sights of Taiwan.

Dr Zechariah Goh was the choral master in charge of making sure the three choirs, SAJC, TJC, and Hwa Chong Voices, sounded decent for the performance, and all in all, I think it was a valuable experience, and I even managed to pick up a few more interesting tricks/warmup sequences. The guest conductor, a certain Qu Chun Quan, senior conductor of the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra and Guest Conductor of the Central Chinese Orchestra in Beijing, conducted the entire performance. And he certainly knows his stuff! The most memorable moment of the performance was the encore piece, "Song Wo Yi Zhi Mei Gui Hua" (Give Me A Rose), which everybody enjoyed tremendously.

After some growing pains, I feel the J1s are coming along fine now, and there is a sense of melancholic nostalgia as I prepare for my departure from the school.

Congratulations to the choir on a SUPERB performance in Viva Vox III!!!

It was a breakthrough concert that really showed the rest of the school what you are capable of. You did great in transmitting the emotions, the musicality, the sheer splendour and intensity of the songs to the audience, and I'm sure many in the audience appreciated all these, even the 1st half Latin songs!

All credit to the comm members to their organization, meticulousness, and spontaneity for getting everything done on schedule, and of course, to our conductor Mr Tay for helping you get to where you are today.

To the J2s, your commitment and passion for singing well has set a high standard for future members of the choir. It may now be time to study, but I do hope you will keep your passion for the choir burning even into the future.

To the J1s, you all have done very well in matching the high standards and expectations set by Mr Tay and the J2s. Now, the challenge is to keep it up, and further improve! Believe in yourselves, there's still so much you can do.

Hello Choir! :D

This is my first ever entry in the choir blog (shouldn't be the last, still it's ironic how my first entry should come at this time).

But that's besides the point. I came here for a reason.
There is a certain fact about songs that many people have forgotten.
It is so simple that it's almost common sense. However, it's probably due to it's simplicity that many find it insignificant and forget about it eventually.

People, music in a song is important, no question about that, but the significance of lyrics are not to be ignored.
The meaning of the song, is the very soul and the purpose the music is composed in the first place. Without the words, songs are not songs..

We have a tendency to just sing the pieces without a conscious effort to mean what we sing.
Can you feel the Excitement when singing "America"?
What about the Joy and sense of gratitude in "Thank You for the Music"?
Imagine yourself as the audience, do you think you can sense these emotions and feelings being conveyed from the songs in the way we are singing it?
As for "Beauty and the Beast"?
"Where is the Love?"

Still, it's not too late to change things, this is a matter of putting your soul in music-making, to make the songs you sing humane, induce your feelings in them, personify them.
Give life to the music.

All that is possible with a change in attitude.
Please sing like you've never done before, mean what you sing, become the character you're singing as.
Remember, tomorrow's a time when you can be somebody you are not and no one will criticise you.
Become a "Beast" in love in "Beauty and the Beast".
Become a "Puerto Rican" in "West Side Story".
Be that "girl with golden hair".

hello choir! :D

i hope this is not too late. i cant really speak well in front of crowds, esp if it's impromptu. i cannot think properly & everything will come out really messy. so im here! :D

alright, so tomorrow's the day, our big day. tomorrow, a chapter will be closed. for many of us, esp the J2s, this may be the last concert we'll be doing. to the J1s, although there may still be next year, still another chance, i hope everyone WILL give their all. every single one of you in the choir is unique in your own way, and each one of you really makes a difference.

we've come a long way. preparations for concert began all the way from last year. we've practiced so hard, all the late nights, all the tiring days, days where we felt like giving up, all the happy & fun times, times where we may get irritated with one another. and all we have is only 1 chance, one chance to show the audience what the choir is really made of. we're not some slack cca where people come, sing songs and go. we're definitely more than that, right?

we only have ONE chance. so we either make it or break it. just 1 night. everyone, just give your all, enjoy the music and leave the stage with zero regrets. you may ask the seniors, the feeling of regreting because we didnt give our best is heartbreaking.

so once on stage tomorrow, stay calm, focus just let it flow.
we'll do fine (:

Tip of the Week

This is something Terence Toh did with us when warming up on short notice (ie. people were late!!!). Simply put, we did all the breathing exercises first, and then instead of vocalization, we would either just hum the notes, or do the vibrating lips thingy.

Not a real substitute for actually singing out to work out the kinks in the throat (and phlegm, and other... unsavory stuff...) , but it does warm up the body enough to avoid the aftereffects of singing without a proper warm up sequence.

Still, pls, pls, be on time (or early!) for every practice to avoid this!

Choral Tip of the Week

Urgh, this place is sure quite dead. So maybe to perk things up a bit, here's something we can try: tips on choral singing!

Over the years, I've picked up a few tricks here and there (mostly applicable to guys, unfortunately).

Anyway, this tip is for aspiring altos and basses who wish to increase their range, specifically into the higher notes. It can also help tenors in making their high notes sound nicer, and for more confident half-voice.

Sing do-re-mi or do-mi-do in falsetto to any syllable you like(even humming) at the highest note you think you can manage, and then proceed down as far as you can before switching back to your real voice. Go all the way down, then all the way up in real voice again before switching to falsetto. Go up and down the scale several times, and do it every day.

omg, this blog is so dead im FINALLY here to pump some life back to it! HAHA! so anyway, concert is only 7 days/7x24 hours/7x24x60 mins away! AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

we have extremely little time left and and i dont think we're 80% there! our dance is still a bit messy, we have choreo a dance for "getcha head in the game", not everyone is 100% sure of their notes, worst of all, we still dont have full attendance for every rehearsal!!

i really hope everyone, an i mean EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU, dedicate this entire week to choir! this is our FIRST EVER MUSICAL in sajchorale's history & im sure we want it to become and success and not regretting after the concert is over! so i urge all of us to put in our utmost best and not waste anymore time during rehearsals!

sat: 845 to 4 - dance to be completed by 4pm, rehearsals with court shoes

Dear choir, thank you for your great performance for Teacher's Day. Of all the items for the concert, yours was the most heartfelt and appreciated by the entire teaching staff. Thank you so much for the meaningful lyrics!

It's been a rather hectic Term 3 for the choir, with chapel and this performance, plus learning fest 'busking' and the CIP at Plaza Sing. So do take a well deserved break from the choir, since your promos are coming! We'll worry about Open House and year-end stuff after the exams.

Congrats to the choir for getting a silver for SYF Central Judging!

It was your best performance of the year, and given the limitations and constraints we had, not to mention the high standards for SYF, the choir has done very well!

Time to look ahead: what's next?

Some rest and relaxation, normal practices, a camp, then the Finland trip(for those going). After the June holidays, J2s handover to the J1s, a few performances in school for term 3, then study break. Nov/Dec hols, Christmas caroling, maybe a guest performance or two for other concerts.

Things are looking up!

Aye hello everyone. Seems like its been a long time I've posted here hmm? Haha.

Wondering what I'm doing here too anyway, looking at the work I have lying right before my eyes. Ha. Ah, screw my work for the time being. I'm just going to blog an entry. Yes, about SYF duh. Haha.

Looking at all the tags on the tagboard, I must say that we're really blessed to have juniors like that. Seriously. So full of fervor and optimism.

And hope.

Hm its been said, hope is light tomorrow with today. Haha. The carrot dangling in front of the donkey. Forward, forward. Never back.

I don't think I need to remind all of us that SYF is barely 2 weeks away now. Yeah, time's tight. Very tight. But. I think we all can make it. No, I know we have the potential to make it. We can. The gold's well within reach. We just have continue striving hard, working hard. Tap our full potential.

I can remember what I told some seniors late last year. I think it was Aini. Wasn't it? Hahaha. Okay anyway, I can remember saying that the coming batch of J1s will either make us or break us. Was damn worried actually, like, eh shit ah. About 20 people in the choir. How? We need more J1s! Blaaaah! Then when I first saw the choir at full strength during the 1st 3 months, I told myself. No way this batch will break us. They'll be the ones to get that illustrious gold with us. For us, in fact. Yeah.

I've got faith in all of you guys. Utmost faith.

The J2s, well I guess the SYF gold is the cumulation of all the work that we've put in for the past year and a half or so. Viva Vox, combined concert with TJC. All those practices and camps. All were stepping stones to the ultimate prize. Yes, the gold. All that we've worked for since the start. I can assure you that it will all be worth it at the end, with the gold in our hands.

For all of us, it'll be the last ever SYF that we'll be competing in. For some, those poor souls, their first and last. But that doesn't mean anything. First time, 3 times whatever. All doesn't matter. What matters is the time now. Saints Chorale, SYF. Gold. That's all that matters. And since its the last time, I ask of you all to make it your most memorable one. The one, where at the end, tears of joy will be shed, emotions and euphoria running high. It will all be worth it. I can really assure you that.

SYF gold. Too lofty a dream perhaps, some may say. But no, I don't believe in that. I'm sticking to what I said in the first 3 months. I don't see how different it can be now. We have the potential to get the gold. We can.

Faith and hope. Fervor and optimism.

We've got the chance to elevate the name of Saints Chorale right now. We totally do not deserve to be shunned and ignored, like those dark days in the past. We have come a very long way since 2, or even 1 year ago. The seniors can attest to that.

Guys, give it all you've got for the next 2 weeks or so. Everything you have. The gold is within reach, at our fingertips. We just have to give that extra push. That extra boost up, to attain high heavens.

I'm not speaking as the choir president here. I'm speaking as one of you guys. I'm a singer, a member of Saints Chorale too. I bleed, I sweat, laugh or cry with all of you guys. I'm one of you too. I don't believe in class distinctions here. No, we're all in this together. Together as one. We sing as one. We aim for the gold as one. We strive as one.

We are a choir. And singing in a choir is not an individual effort. Its a team one. And what makes it even more hallowed is the fact that the seniors gave it their all to get us to where we are today. Their blood, their sweat. The gold is as much of ours as theirs, and I can safely say that all of them are more than a hundred percent behind us and our struggles. So I guess we'd better not disappoint them? Haha. Really, we owe it to them that much.

Okay, here comes the but part. Yes, BUT. But, if we don't get the gold (heaven forbid) due to whatever reason it may be. Don't lose your optimism and fervor for choir no matter what. We know that we've given it our all, and tried our best. Don't place the blame on yourselves. No matter the result, I sincerely thank every one of you guys for the effort you put in. Blame the judges perhaps. =P

Anyway!

People, we stand at the brink of creating history. The brink of Saints Chorale's first ever gold in god knows how many years of history.

All we need is for everyone to give it their all for the next 2 weeks. Okay guys?

We'll all go have a crazy party after all's over. For those going Finland.. Heh Heh Heh. Need I say anymore? Hahahaha.

Did you know...

Elroy, Joshua, and me participated in the same choral competition 4 years back? Yup, the first Voyage of Songs, in Genting, 2003. They were with VS, I was with NUS. It was kinda like a Singapore SYF held overseas, and it was a lot of fun!

Hey Elroy, NUS did better for both Potong Padi and Sanctus. Nyah, nyah, nyah!

Anyway, NUS really lost out only to VJC and Novo Concertante, a group from the Phillipines. Those of you who participated in the Jubilate 2004 (Shi Hui, Yvonne, right?) would have heard Novo. They are frikkin good.

It'll make life for Mr Tay a lot easier without having to go through all the basics, and save time on rehearsals. You do want to make each practice as productive as possible, right?

Hi everyone! My 1st post here :)

Oh just want to tell everyone how excited we teachers feel after the chapel today! I think the feeling of singing WITH all of you is really great! (I'll leave Ms Ng and Mr Yeo to tell you how fantastic they feel before, during and after the performance) I think it was one of the best chapels we have ever had (of course, we sang mah) and I'm sure most have enjoyed it. Well done!

The highly acclaimed Varsity Voices concert series will be back on 4 March 2007, with promise of more exciting and vibrant repertoire!

Conducted by esteemed choral director Nelson Kwei, the NUS Choir proudly presents Varsity Voices 2007: Musica Sacra, an evening of divine melodies and sacred music, a testimony of the Choir's continuous musical exploration of a diverse and exciting genre.

Varsity Voices promises an enjoyable and uplifting evening as the NUS Choir presents a repertoire of sacred music that spans centuries and continents. The first half will feature classical pieces such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Missa Brevis (Sparrow Mass), reminiscent of sprightly sparrow chirpings, and Franz Joseph Haydn's festively grand and symphonic Te Deum

The second half will feature sacred pieces by contemporary composers such as Vajda Janos and Ralph Hoffman, demonstrating musical colour through the use of dissonance. Okay, okay! Sheesh, Not only do I have to settle admin matters, I also have to update the blog...

Anyway, here's a funny piece I ran across during my NUS choir days concerning the different sections of the choir and how they relate to one another.

Just for fun, does it apply to you all?

In any chorus, there are four voice parts: soprano, alto, tenor, and bass. Sometimes these are divided into first and second within each part, prompting endless jokes about first and second basses. There are also various other parts such as baritone, countertenor, contralto, mezzo soprano, etc., but these are mostly used by people who are either soloists, or belong to some excessively hotshot classical a cappella group (this applies especially to countertenors), or are trying to make excuses for not really fitting into any of the regular voice parts, so we will ignore them for now.

Each voice part sings in a different range, and each one has a very different personality. You may ask, "Why should singing different notes make people act differently?", and indeed this is a mysterious question and has not been adequately studied, especially since scientists who study musicians tend to be musicians themselves and have all the peculiar complexes that go with being tenors, french horn players, timpanists, or whatever. However, this is beside the point; the fact remains that the four voice parts can be easily distinguished, and I will now explain how.

THE SOPRANOS are the ones who sing the highest, and because of this they think they rule the world. They have longer hair, fancier jewellery, and swishier skirts than anyone else, and they consider themselves insulted if they are not allowed to go at least to a high F in every movement of any given piece. When they reach the high notes, they hold them for at least half again as long as the composer and/or conductor requires, and then complain that their throats are killing them and that the composer and conductor are sadists. Sopranos have varied attitudes toward the other sections of the chorus, though they consider all of them inferior. Altos are to sopranos rather like second violins to first violins - nice to harmonise with, but not really necessary. All sopranos have a secret feeling that the altos could drop out and the piece would sound essentially the same, and they don't understand why anybody would sing in that range in the first place - it's so boring. Tenors, on the other hand, can be very nice to have around; besides their flirtation possibilities (it is a well-known fact that sopranos never flirt with basses), sopranos like to sing duets with tenors because all the tenors are doing is working very hard to sing in a low-to-medium soprano range, while the sopranos are up there in the stratosphere showing off. To sopranos, basses are the scum of the earth - they sing too damn loud, are useless to tune because they're down in that low, low range - and there has to be something wrong with anyone who sings in the F clef, anyway.

THE ALTOS are the salt of the earth - in their opinion, at least. Altos are unassuming people, who would wear jeans to concerts if they were allowed to. Altos are in a unique position in the chorus in that they are unable to complain about having to sing either very high or very low, and they know that all the other sections think their parts are pitifully easy. But the altos know otherwise. They know that while the sopranos are screeching away on a high A, they are being forced to sing elaborate passages full of sharps and flats and tricks of rhythm, and nobody is noticing because the sopranos are singing too loud (and the basses usually are too). Altos get a deep, secret pleasure out of conspiring together to tune the sopranos flat. Altos have an innate distrust of tenors, because the tenors sing in almost the same range and think they sound better. They like the basses, and enjoy singing duets with them - the basses just sound like a rumble anyway, and it's the only time the altos can really be heard. Altos' other complaint is that there are always too many of them and so they never get to sing really loud.

THE TENORS are spoiled. That's all there is to it. For one thing, there are never enough of them, and choir directors would rather sell their souls than let a halfway decent tenor quit, while they're always ready to unload a few altos at half price. And then, for some reason, the few tenors are always really good - it's one of those annoying facts of life. So it's no wonder that tenors always get swollen heads - after all, who else can make sopranos swoon? The one thing that can make tenors insecure is the accusation (usually by the basses) that anyone singing that high couldn't possibly be a real man... In their usual perverse fashion, the tenors never acknowledge this, but just complain louder about the composer being a sadist and making them sing so damn high. Tenors have a love-hate relationship with the conductor, too, because the conductor is always telling them to sing louder because there are so few of them. No conductor in recorded history has ever asked for less tenor in a forte passage. Tenors feel threatened in some way by all the other sections - the sopranos because they can hit those incredibly high notes; the altos because they have no trouble singing the notes the tenors kill themselves for; and the basses because, although they can't sing anything above an E, they sing it loud enough to drown the tenors out. Of course, the tenors would rather die than admit any of this. It is a little-known fact that tenors move their eyebrows more than anyone else while singing.

THE BASSES sing the lowest of anybody. This basically explains everything. They are stolid, dependable people, and have more facial hair than anybody else. The basses feel perpetually unappreciated, but they have a deep conviction that they are actually the most important part (a view endorsed by musicologists, but certainly not by sopranos or tenors), despite the fact that they have the most boring part of anybody and often sing the same note(or in endless fifths) for an entire page. They compensate for this by singing as loudly as they can get away with - most basses are tuba players at heart. Basses are the only section that can regularly complain about how low their part is, and they make horrible faces when trying to hit very low notes. Basses are charitable people, but their charity does not extend so far as tenors, whom they consider effete poseurs. Basses hate tuning the tenors more than almost anything else. Basses like altos - except when they have duets and the altos get the good part. As for the sopranos, they are simply in an alternate universe which the basses don't understand at all. They can't imagine why anybody would ever want to sing that high and sound that bad when they make mistakes. When a bass makes a mistake, the other three parts will cover him, and he can continue on his merry way, knowing that sometime, somehow, he will end in tune.

I'm putting up this link for those without any formal music education(I'm the classic example of this sort of chorister). Basic music notation and the such. Well, the Provisional Admissions Exercise results are out, and that means the appeals process has started!

Alrighty! It's been one heck of a year for the entire choir, and you guys finally have a chance to take a well-deserved(I hope!) long break from studies and singing.

You guys should have read Ms Ng's posts on Moodle, and if you haven't, mosey over there ASAP just to see what she thinks.

Anyway, here's my own series of comments, half-remembered anecdotes, and general fei-hua.

This is really the fourth choir I've been involved with, since I started out as a conscripted Sec 1 boy in the newly established Catholic High choir, named the Edward Becheras Choir, after the founder of the school. We sucked badly then, completely different from the polished voices of the current CH choir(Gold with Honours. Gads. Who would've thunk it?) . No professional conductors, no vocal training, half-baked teachers trying to teach us to sing in tune with barely acceptable chords, and me desperately figuring out ways to sustain my soprano voice long enough while it was sloooooowly cracking to sing "Scarborough Fair" for our very first performance. But hey, it was fun when I was there before I left after 1 plus year with the choir. Too busy with other stuff, but the seed had been planted.

I admit it, I didn't select the choir to be my preferred CCA in charge as a teacher. When it came that I was assigned to the choir at the beginning of this year, I wasn't shocked either, because Ms Ng had been pushing for it since she found out about my background. The very first practice I attended was also, coincidentally, the very first practice the seniors had with Mr Tay. Hearing them sing, and as a badly under-strength choir really reminded me of my own beginning(even if the CH choir started out with 60 plus members because of enforced conscription...). But the lack of focus was similar.

Mr Tay was the big difference. I could hear a clear change in the choir's singing from before he came in, and after he left. Two hours only, and already an improvement! It was heartening, but also a reminder of the long, long road ahead.

The months came and went, and we got through the 1st intake, then the 2nd. Not much we could do with the 1st, and unfortunately many of them did not stay on. It was only from the 2nd intake onwards that we could really get down to business, so to speak. The choir improved, sometimes by leap and bounds, sometimes with tiny steps forwards, but even if you, the choristers, could not hear yourselves, we could. Not only did all of you improve musically, you also learnt to organise and manage your own events/affairs more efficiently. Granted, there are still many areas for improvement(when hasn't there been AFI?), but that was really all I wanted to see. People learning, getting better, improving constantly. And having fun in the process. That was the sum of my time in the NJC and the NUS choirs, and I hope you have experienced the same thing in the past year.

During your very last performance in the CC, there were times when I had goosebumps from your singing, especially Adventi Enek. Not only had you mastered the music, you were able to convey the emotional meaning of the song. For quite a few moments, you've reached the epitome of music-making. And isn't that what it's all about, touching the hearts of the audience through music?

Singing in a choir takes effort, passion, and an ability to work well with others. There's very little that can match the satisfaction you feel after a particularly demanding piece that requires you to sing in harmony and rhythm with many other people. Knowing that all the hard work had paid off, the pleased look on your conductor's face(okay, Nelson Kwei wasn't always pleased with the NUS choir basses, especially when we mess up the rhythm of a song or go off-pitch...), and the applause of the audience.

I'm really envious of you all. Hearing all of you sing, often made me wish I was a JC student again, having fun in a choir. It's tough going at times, but nothing worth having ever comes without a price.

Treasure the next few months. I'll be bringing my camera for all practices. Trust me, it'll be hell while you're slogging through practice after demanding practice, but when it's all over, you'll never forget the experience and the memories(and laughing at the photos). How much you'll get from the choir will depend on how much effort and love you'd have put into it. I'd put in plenty, and I got plenty more out of it. Without the choirs I have been in, I would not be where I am today(amazingly for a guy without a background in music).

i feel bad for hijacking this blog. because the choir has done anything to me. sorry to the choir for hijacking this blog and depriving you guys of your space.

on the other hand, i had to painstakingly delete nuisance posts by this 'wobbly guy' person. the feeling as i did so is not what i would call 'sorry'. in fact, it's pure disgust as i unevitably have to read all his/her disgusting entries.

would like to remind the future administrators of this blog, presumably the public relations officer that while this blog is for the choir peeps to hang out, it is NOT the official school website or whatsoever. so if you get the hint...

and i've heard enough to know that this 'wobbly guy' person did not create the blog. in fact, when he invited himself to be an administrator by logging in at first as 'saintschorale' and proclaiming it to everyone, he/her was just asking to be kicked out. just that i was the one who eventually did it. not that i take credit for doing this dirty job.

so in future, will the next administrator please filter cretin like him/her? and as this episode shows, allowing everyone access to this blog can invite trouble, especially since an outsider like me can guess such a simple password (which was broadcasted in one of the earlier posts). so maybe you can ask anyone who wants to post something to send a copy of it before you post it online?

yes, this is a joint and shared blog but does that give you the permission or the authority to edit any of the posts, no matter how small, without first asking the author? even if i did not sign off, it is only basic courtesy to at least put up a post asking for permission.

who are you infiltrators? what have we, at saintschorale done to you to incite so much hatred to you? is it the teachers, the comm or just the singers? we are just singing for passion's sake and have not done anybody harm. tell us if you have any grieviencies, but do not stoop to such a level to air your displeasures!

i can only conclude that the anonymous1,2,3 and SATB are not from the choir because no one in it will ever ever hurt a fly and everyone there is so well liked and everyone loves each other, from the top, the teachers, to the millipedes that invade the AVA(Ed: really?) (to hell with you, whoever who put this in), but especially the top.

visionary leadership, careful compromise, a listening ear to the masses, tight fisted but gentle control; all hallmarks of a great leader. exclusively at saintschorale.

The SAJC Chorale(or choir), will be holding our very first(hopefully not the last) annual Viva Vox Concert at the St. Andrew's Junior College Cultural Center on the 28th July 2006 at 7.30pm.

This concert is hosted by St. Andrew's Junior College Choir and will feature guest performances by the St. Andrew's Secondary School choir, as well as the Junior School choir. The choirs will present a mix of choral works from around the world, ranging from sacred works, Japanese folk songs, pop pieces from ABBA, and others. The SAJC Chorale is conducted by Mr Albert Tay.

considering that concert's less than 2 weeks away now.

no, i'm not here to bitch and whine about how screwed things are.
even if they are that screwed.

but i do know that many, many people are complaining about the frequency and length of choir practices.

well screw that.

i understand the need for the practices, i understand the urgency.
its really somewhat unsettling to see such stuff happening now.
but things can only be carried that far.

its no use pushing when the vast majority of us are like, half dead.
i know our efficiency can be much better.

people, we are a team.
we work together as a team.
just put aside our differences for now.

singing in a choir is a team effort, not a solo sprint.

yes, agreed. shit happens.
but its no use pointing fingers at who was the main culprit of that pile of shit.
hell, sometimes there isn't even one to point fingers at.

we're all in this together alrights.
whether we like it or not.
